482nd BG Capt. Bill Owen after flying 30 B-17 missions (including every mission of Black Week) went on to fly with the 3rd Scouting Force in P-51D 44-14124 CL-# “Homer’s Roamer”. Owen named the P-51 for his crew chief S/Sgt. Homer Cheek. Bill flew nearly 143 hours in Homer’s Roamer. The Scouts would fly out ahead of the Bomber streams and report back on weather, flak and German fighters over the target. (Owen Collection)
